Kim Tae Woo, former lead singer of the defunct pop group g..o.d., edged out other K-pop idols to win the 2009 Song of the Year award in a poll by Soompi, the biggest English K-pop fan site.
Kim’s song “Love Rain” scored 8,410 to clinch the title, beating Brown Eyed Girls’ “Abracadabra” which scored 8,110 points and 2NE1’s “I Don’t Care” (6,981 points).
Soompi (www.soompi.com) is the biggest English K-pop fan site with more than 686,000 members mostly from the United States, Canada, Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia.
The fan site’s Soompi Gayo Awards recognized the top K-pop idols in 2009.
The Chart Champion Award went to boy idol group 2PM which had four songs in Soompi’s music charts: “Only You,” “Again and Again,” “I Hate You” and “Heartbeat.” The award is similar to the Daesang or artist of the year and it is given to the artist which scored the most accumulated points in Soompi’s weekly music charts.
Super Junior bagged the Album of the Year award for “Sorry, Sorry” with a score of 10,218.. It is the only full album with two number one songs in Soompi’s charts: “Sorry, Sorry” and “It’s You.”
Rookie pop group 2NE1 which includes Sandara Park won the Mini-Album of the Year award with a score of 11,230. It beat 2PM, 4Minute, Davichi, Kara, and Kim Tae Woo.
2PM also won the Top Male Group award while the Silver Prize went to SHINee (11,296 points). The Bronze was awarded to SS501 (10,822 points). The award is given to a male group that accumulates the highest chart scores.
The Top Female Group gold award was given to Kara (14,527 points) while the Brown Eyed Girls (13,608) earned the silver award and Girls Generation (13,489), the bronze.
“Kara has five hits on our chart this year, the most by any artists — ‘Pretty Girl,’ ‘Honey,’ ‘Same Heart,’ ‘Wanna’ and ‘Mister,’” Soompi said.
In the Top Male Solo Artist category, K.Will won the gold with a score of 12,435 and Lee Seung Chul and Kim Tae Woo won the silver and bronze awards, respectively.
Baek Ji Young accumulated 9,529 points to win the gold as Top Female Solo Artist, edging out Son Dam Bi who got the silver with 6,616 and IU who got the bronze with 5,367.
The Top Mixed Group awards went to 8Eight, gold; Koyote, silver; and Rumble Fish, bronze.
2NE1 also scored the gold prize in the Top Newcomers award with 11,837 points over silver prize winner 4Minute which had 10,663 and T-Ara which won the bronze award.
The Top Digital Single of 2009 award went to 4Minute for the group’s “Hot Issue..”
The Top Male-Female Duets or Collaborations awards went to Baek Ji Young (with 2PM’s Taec Yeon) for “Candy To My Ear.”
SS501 also bagged the Top Drama/Movie official soundtrack award for their song “Because I’m Stupid” which was used in the hit drama series “Boys over Flowers.”
